Speak n’ Seagull, designed by Chip Webster Architecture in Nantucket, Massachusetts, is a great example of how a home can respect the island’s strict historic character on the outside while allowing a completely fresh design personality on the inside. Nantucket’s preservation-driven streetscape often creates the illusion that every house is identical, but this project proves how much architectural individuality can still exist through planning, interior tone, and spatial experience. The home blends contemporary detailing with Cape-style coastal comfort, creating an updated interpretation of classic Nantucket living rather than a simple replica of tradition.

A defining element of the design is the custom three-story staircase, which creates a continuous vertical journey from the underground level up to the second-floor living spaces. Instead of being treated as a functional circulation core, the stair becomes the home’s architectural spine, organizing movement and giving the interior a sense of discovery. Surrounding the home, wraparound porches extend the living areas outward, capturing panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and dunes and reinforcing the island lifestyle where outdoor space is just as important as what happens inside.
