Reliance Church in Temecula, California is a project that approaches church architecture with humility, restraint, and a strong focus on community. Designed by TR Design Group, the sanctuary was never meant to feel monumental or overproduced. Instead, the goal was to create a building that reflects the values of the congregation while integrating naturally into its surrounding neighborhood.

For many years, Reliance Church functioned as a mobile church, setting up and tearing down each week in rented gymnasiums. That experience directly shaped the vision for this permanent home. As Pastor Ted Leavenworth shares in the film, the shift to a dedicated space changed the way people gather. “When people come here, I don’t want them to experience religion,” he explains. “I want them to experience people, just normal people living out their faith.” Having a permanent sanctuary allows members to arrive without urgency, making room for conversation, hospitality, and connection.

Architecturally, the building is intentionally understated. The design emphasizes function, clarity, and comfort, with careful attention to acoustics, lighting, seating orientation, and sightlines. Every element works quietly in the background, guiding focus toward the front of the room without distraction. One voice in the film compares the building to a family car, something meant to safely carry people from one place to another, without becoming the focus itself. In this way, the architecture supports worship rather than competing with it.

The pastors speak openly about how the space has changed the rhythm of their community. While the service itself remains the same, the environment now allows leaders to be more present, more hospitable, and more relational. Rather than brief, passing interactions on Sunday mornings, people linger, recognize one another, and engage more deeply. The sanctuary becomes not just a place of worship, but a setting where relationships are built and sustained.

Projects like Reliance Church are a reminder that meaningful architecture does not always announce itself through bold form or spectacle. Sometimes its success is measured in how comfortably people gather, how easily conversations happen, and how little the building gets in the way. This story was documented by Chibi Moku, with a focus on capturing how architecture, design, and community come together in everyday use.
