Wheel Pad by LineSync Architecture

Project ID #2099

Wheel Pad is a compact, 200-square-foot accessible bedroom-and-bath module designed to attach to an existing house, turning a private home into an immediately workable living environment for someone returning from rehab or suddenly living with mobility limitations. In this Wilmington, Vermont prototype, LineSync Architecture frames the project not as a “tiny house trend,” but as transitional housing with a clear social purpose: keeping families together during crisis while preserving privacy and dignity. As the team explains, the goal is simple and direct, to allow a family member to “roll in to dinner,” stay close to daily life, and still have their own separate space at home.

What’s architecturally interesting is how much design effort is invested in removing friction from everyday routines. The module includes a fully accessible ramp and a connection to the main house that can route through an existing window or door opening. Inside, the layout is refined through real-world feedback loops, vetted not only with wheelchair users, but with nurses, physicians, PT/OT professionals, and home-healthcare specialists. The result is accessibility that aims to feel domestic instead of institutional, from higher-positioned plugs and switches that are reachable from a chair, to custom grab elements that are visually considered but still require real grip and control when hands are wet.

Construction-wise, the film also highlights the collaborative building culture behind the prototype, with architecture, engineering, and construction management students working alongside the design team to push the project forward. LineSync notes the SIP panel shell as a performance backbone, enabling comfort and quick heating with a simple electric fan-coil system. The most compelling moments are when the design is tested live with a user, prompting immediate micro-adjustments, like splitting furniture into two parts for easier bed access or refining the feel of hardware so it works from different approach angles. Wheel Pad becomes a small building with a big architectural mission: proving that supportive housing can be both well-designed and genuinely practical.
